| Author bio: I am a 62 year old male that met Jesus over 30 years ago. I was considering suicide when Jesus found me and gave me a reason to live. Because I didn't have the answer then, it has made it easier to know "Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit saith the Lord"(Zech 4:6) is the only way in Jesus. Not about me, but only about Him. My writing comes about as the Holy Spirit leads. I pray that it will touch others as much as it has me. |

Sine Responso | by Vocal Strain March 18, 2012 | Free! | 927 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Blessed by my sickening thoughts of the dreary life that I have lived through the years, this curse has taught me much on how to express the woes from deep below my skin rather let myself tear me apart as I could spiral down and become disorientated by the world around us, more than it does — at it’s best. Like the finest wine, there’s a tendency to bleed it dry to the last drop until the flavour leaves my tongue burning with the flavour. |

We keep a small farm in Thailand where we raise organic fruit and produce, and ducks…a great number of ducks. When not reading, writing, or teaching, I spend time with my family, my friends, my ducks, and my trees. Trees provide a certain sanity and calm in a world so often too concerned with the insane rush to destroy itself. |

An American Papyrus | by Steven Sills April 04, 2012 | You set the price! | 8769 words | Sample 20% |
| Author bio: Steven David Justin Sills is a poet, novelist, and scholar of great books of the Western Canon. Review from the Arkansas Gazette: Papyrus: An Eloquent Ode to Life's Many Gritty Moments by Amy L. Wilson Arkansas Gazette Little Rock, Arkansas April 1990 An American Papyrus Steven Sills The Chestnut Hills Press Poetry Series 63 pages; $6.95 paperback Twenty-six poems make up this first published book by Steven Sills, 26, of Fayetteville. Sills' vision is often a dark one. He writes of the homeless, the abused, the forgotten people. He is also intrigued with the mystical, the sensual/sexual, loss--as in losing those whom we hold dear, such as a spouse or lover--as well as the lost, such as someone who is autistic, who seems unreachable. Sills' skillful use of the language to impart the telling moments of a life is his strength. He chooses his words carefully, employing a well-developed vocabulary. He is thoughtful about punctuation, where to break lines and when to make a new stanza. He's obviously well versed in "great" literature. Sills' command of language helps to soften the blows of some of the seamier passages found in his poems. Seamy may not be the best word to use. Perhaps gritty is a better word or just plain matter-of-fact and to the point, as in this descriptive passage from "Oracion A Traves De Gasshole," about the hopeless feelings of a respiratory therapy worker: "With the last of the air drawing in/ Begins to fold its walls; and he could imagine it/ Like he could imagine from inexact memories/ The woman last night at the hospital, whom he began to like---/ Her body pulling cell by cell/ Apart before he had a chance to finish the rescue with the hose." The book begins with "Post-Annulment2" a poem with a poignant description of society's displaced--"As the sun blazes upon the terminal's/ Scraped concrete/The shelved rows of the poor men"--and continues by describing a city scene through the eyes of a maintenance worker at the Hilton Hotel. The protagonist's wife has left him and he is taking the bus to work that morning, his mind wandering as he looks for the key to why she is gone. "He rings the bell. / The idea of her not home and legally annulled/ From his life--her small crotch not tightened to his desperate thrusts/ Makes him feel sick. He gets down from the bus./ He goes to work. He suddenly knows that he is not in love." As many poets will do, Sills could not leave this work alone. So a hybrid of this poem, "Post-Annulment" ends the book. In it, he has kept many of the original lines and added parenthetical remarks to expand on his ideas. It is in this context he allows himself to comment on religion: "Religion is a lie! Everything is a lie!" and on marriage: "Marriage, that sanctified legal rape, fosters the child-man to be a destined societal function as he grows up in the family unit." Not all of the poems are so bleak and cynical in every passage, however, as is apparent in "The San Franciscan's Night Meditations": "The night is full of impulses to live and run and seep heavily into its dark robes of silence and morbid rightness." People who do not feel comfortable examining in detail the darker side of life--the the details that the average person overlooks because it just hurts or feels to strange to look--will not enjoy this book. Serious writers of free verse, contemporary poetry and/or those who study it will not be disappointed. Sills, a native of Missouri, is a recent graduate of Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield. He currently is working in Fayetteville. Sills dedicated his book to Mike Burns, a poet and teacher at SMSU who helped him edit his work. |

Poetic Savior - First Sermon | by Shane Diamond July 23, 2011 | Free! | 2889 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: A small town in Ontario Canada, a town so small that it would be called "The Boonies" or "The Sticks" is where I spent my life growing up, now all through out my life with anyone who has made it big they have always been from a big city. Nobody has been from the middle of no where. But that is where I have been growing up, in the hamlets that all you can see are trees or fields as far as the eye can see no matter what direction you look. The towns overlooked and forgotten by history that where at night you could hear coyotes howl. For almost all of my life I never really did have any friends I always roamed around the places that I lived alone anytime people would see me they would see me roaming around all by my lonesome, perhaps I was loner perhaps that I was destined to be a loner for life who continued to keep things bottled up on the inside and never let anyone get close to me. Then the writing bug hit me: About six years ago I decided to pick up a pen and began to express myself in the form of poetry, but of course not all of the poetry that I write is the same it all has been influenced by my thoughts and emotions at the time of writing it. While dabbling into the art of poetry you will also see me and my wife Jessica dabble into a few other things ranging from music to fantasy sports. If I have a interest in it then you can best believe that I will be giving a good solid attempt at bringing that forth to share with the world to show everyone that ya boy from out in "the sticks" or from "the boonies" isn't somebody to be taken out of any situation no matter what I attempt. |

The Birth of Taliesin The Bard | by Richard Britton Oct. 05, 2010 | Free! | 2309 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Richard is a poet by blood, as well as a theologian and semiotician. His poetry is neo-romantic, gothic and arabesque. He firmly believes in the role of the poet as a reformer as well as a performer and that poetry can change the world, but not in the way we necessarily expect. Richard actively resists the crypto-fascism of today’s western society, but finds popular culture a great medium through which the sublime can percolate. He is a great admirer of Byron, Keats, Plato, Aristotle, John Ruskin, Matthew Arnold and St. Paul of Tarsus. Richard often gets lost in his own little microcosm, but he loves poetry because it has protected him from deep melancholies, like a guardian muse. |

| Author bio: Born in the South of France, eight years later found myself residing in Australia; probably due to the fact that my family migrated there in 1971. Although my trade is ‘ceramic wall and floor tiler’, I now enjoy performing Paramedical duties in my ‘newly’ found career - since 1995 (not that new I guess). I love poetry and short stories (short attention span . . . lol). I first started to write in the mid eighties, and am looking forward to publishing all my work (at least most of it), and hope readers enjoy my style as much as I love immersing myself in the work of others. Feel free to contact me, as I love all feedback - or just a chat. |

| Author bio: In 1993 I was in a near-fatal car crash that changed my life forever. Since then I've divided my life into two categories: BC & AD. Before Crash & After Damage. Before Crash (BC) I was a thrill junkie. I skied, hiked, climbed, hang glided, all kinds of fun stuff. I got banged up sometimes but never too bad. Then I almost died going to work in a suit & tie. For me chasing money was more dangerous than chasing fun!!! |

Winter Haiku | by Angus Brownfield Dec. 09, 2011 | Free! | 128 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: My life, sort of The writers whose lives interest me most are either long dead or have led lives not typical of writers. Yet it evidently helps readers to know about writers. A writer whose works I’ve recently become acquainted with, Jodi Picoult, writes a lot about herself on her web page, posts candid photos, and I’m guessing this helps readers connect with her books. Megan McCafferty, author of Sloppy Firsts, Second Helpings, etc., started a retroblog—her diary from age ten through twenty-something, in part, I gather from reading a review in Salon.com, to separate herself from her characters (http://www.meganmccafferty.com/retroblogger/ ). There’s nothing about my life that will enhance the experience of reading my novels. To the extent that they’re autobiographical, they’re not so in any direct way. Flaubert said of Madame Bovary, “Emma, c'est moi.†In the same sense, I’m all the characters in, say, Rigoberto and his two wives: Rigoberto Calderón, Carmen Noble de Calderón, Juan the apprentice and Bernardo the curandero. Like personages in dreams, all the characters in a novel are the author. Still, I think it helps to know where an author came from, not to read his or her works but to put you in touch with him as you would with a performing artist whom you can see in the flesh. Celebrity is an inappropriate concept for writers, usually, but feedback is a workable one. So, here are some of the accidents of my life that I believe helped form me: I’m the last of five children, my oldest sibling twelve years older than I, the closest in age six years my senior. My mother died when I was six, an accident of her life I can’t blame her for but have never fully accepted: I never got enough of her. My father had an extensive library, and I read constantly growing up, though since college television has cut into my reading time. I was raised a Catholic, going to parochial schools and an all-boys Catholic prep school. I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, back when it was the consensus best university in the world. This is a humbling experience: you may have been a whiz in high school, you were no big deal on that campus. I live in Ashland, Oregon, which is an interesting small town, with a world-class repertory theater and a satisfying mixture of foresters, bohemians, geeks, artists and coupon clippers. I married (and divorced) three times, all interesting women, and fathered five children. All of these have shaped me. These authors’ works have most informed my own writing: Elmore Leonard, whom I put first because I’ve read him most recently. There is no one better at catching the flavor of places and peoples through using their patois. Thomas Mann, whose Joseph and His Brothers is the nonpareil of epic novels, indeed, may be the best work of prose fiction ever written. (I consider Shakespeare’s plays to be poetry.) William Faulkner, whose apocryphal Yoknapatawpha County was in my youth as familiar to me as any place I’ve ever lived, and who made me realize what power words have. Faulkner’s short fiction is matched only by Mann’s. Ernest Hemingway, whose The Sun Also Rises surpasses any novel I’ve read in the way he put words down on paper; for a large part of my formative years I read this book every eighteen months or so. Albert Camus, whose novel, The Plague, touches my heart beyond any prose I’ve read. Carlos Castaneda, whose first four books (fiction? non-fiction?) blew out the corners of my imagination. Aeschylus, whose Oresteia made me understand what drama is. E. E. Cummings, who demonstrated that a seemingly mined-out convention, the sonnet, could be fresh and new in the hands of a master. W. B. Yeats, whose corpus is the standard by which I judge all modern poets. Here are some other likes and dislikes: To cook: it’s the bead game, it’s a challenge, it is manic and relaxing at once. I bake all my own (sourdough) bread and make a mean soufflé. My favorite movies: Black Orpheus and Shoot the Piano Player, with 8½ Some Like It Hot, Treasure of Sierra Madre and Chushingura not far behind. My favorite music: almost anything but Rap and the heaviest of Rock and Roll—Allison Kraus to Denny Zeitlin, with Chopin, Beethoven and The Beatles thrown in for good measure. But if I were shipwrecked with the work of just one person, it would have to be Bach’s. Writing is both a therapy and my compulsion. In 2011 I published eight novels, some started back in the Eighties, four completed last year, two started and finished in 2011. For a list of extant works, click here. |

Half a Century Alone | by Nobo13 Dec. 27, 2011 | Free! | 2951 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Hi, I'm Nobo13, a writer, artist and publisher rolled into one. The pen name Nobo13 comes from my surname. It reads like the Japanese for climb 'noboru' but it has an extra bit that resembles the number 13- hence we have Nobo13. Additional the part that is 'noboru' is read as 'to publish' in Chinese, so it made sense for me to use it as a self-published author. Other than writing or doodling away, I've found myself strumming away at ukuleles- I highly recommend getting an uke. It's something that brings a smile to a face quite easily, and is itself very pleasing. Please check out my website, it has a lot of features and fun. |

I enjoy painting and photography as well, and will soon be selling prints of these online. I am active in causes related to animals and the environment.
