INTROVERSION

People ask me, "How ya doin'?";

I say, "What's up?" and pass on,

ritual completed.

They care not how I respond;

why do they ask--why waste the energy...

why do I respond, even with a question?

Because the ritual must be completed.

Because the ritual must be completed

we do things which make no sense.

We come and go unheeded,

blending in our best defense.

"How ya doin'?" matters less

than that I am

invisible.

PERMISSION

It is permitted to look at a woman with longing,

provided she's not too young.

It is permitted to look at a man with loathing,

provided he's not too strong.

It is permitted to despise in others

what you yourself adore,

and to look with lust at violence

with thoughts of settling scores.

It is permitted...

but don't look too long,

and don't look too hard,

and don't voice your hypocrite’s views.

Don't speak of desire,

set your soul on fire,

and burn for the evening news.

THE GREATEST TRAGEDY

All of life is gray on grey,

there is no black and white.

Tomorrow is another day,

do not give up the fight.

We struggle from one cliché

to the next, searching by night

and by day for things without name

or form, yet shining bright.

God in countless incarnations

pushes us, our inclinations

helping, hurting variously,

solely based on expectations.

Where is God if not within us?

Who is He to call us sinners?

He is only me, and you,

and our invisible friends.

God is all we learn to value in existence.

To expend one's life in search of God

--in search of one's self--

is the greatest tragedy.

LAMENT

Imperfect in life…

Flawless in death…

Thus are we all.

My love is now flawless,

and I yearn for her imperfections.

PACK RAT

See the pretties, neatly stored,

Fine additions to my expanding hoard.
