Colors Of My Land
*************
Colors of My Land
I travel the dusty roads of my land
My land is beautiful
I cross the endless plains that
Bear course grass and miniature acacia trees
My land is awesome.
Hills and valleys that go on and on and on-
Amaze my insatiable eyes-
My land is beautiful.
I scan the far off horizon
And a vision of endless time comes to my mind
Images of grass - thatched huts stream before my eyes
I hear voices –
I listen to the laughter in the wind
…The song of my ancestors reaches me…
A sound of victory….a song of jubilee
Once they were-long, long ago
Now
I am…
And as I search the horizon
My vision comes to life…
The blazing bonfire that warmed the chilly nights
Beckons me-and I approach
The smell of smoke
And roasting meat
And sweet potatoes baking in the ashes
Drifts my way
-a sweet aroma of warmth and a tasty meal-
My ears pick up the sound of
Bleating goats and sheep
Cackling chickens as they prepare to settle down for the night
The barking of a dog – begging for a bone
These sounds come to me
And for a moment
I am transported back in time – back to those days
Of long ago –
And I see the colors of my past
Vibrant colors of vivacity and fulfillment
-A realization of the kaleidoscope of life.
I see women with beads arrayed
Around their necks and arms and legs
Chanting and dancing to the pulsating beat of the drum
-an enticing and enchanting beat that sets the rhythm of the night
And the day that is to come.
A lifetime enshrouded in a moment –
A vision and a timeless memory of infinite color
-the color of those who lived before me…
Once they were…
-now I am
And as I walk the land where I was born
As I embrace the vision of what was…
As I touch the colors of my past…
I am…
