Preface

Words have the power to influence our moods and our attitudes. They can outrage our sense of justice, agitate our sensibilities, and incite us to action. They can also have a soothing effect by inducing us to stop and reflect on our selves, our lives, and the world around us. This soothing effect is the one aimed at in these quiet meditations.

The hope is that these brief meditations will aid in the personal search for meaning and that they might be read again and again, with each reading arousing a different collection of associations for the reader.

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) was recognized in 1991 by the American Institute of Architects as “the greatest American architect of all time.” Not only was he brilliant at designing buildings, he was also an iconoclastic, outspoken person with insightful views about life and living. He’s the man who once said: “Early in life I had to choose between honest arrogance and hypocritical humility. I chose the former and have seen no reason to change.”

I’ve spent many hours in quiet contemplation in spaces created by Frank Lloyd Wright, from the amazing house in western Pennsylvania known as “Falling Waters,” to Unity Temple in Oak Park, Illinois.
