Introduction
‘Vinyoh’,in Lam’nso, the language of The Nso People means ‘everything’. This book contains 29 poems exploring the private as well as what has become global worries.
Rake
Eyes as bright as sun gone blaze,
so the flame was when they met,
bliss as close as he could get,
love as pure as God could bless.
Then she came to love and care,
as she said she wouldn’t dare,
gave her heart and all her might,
so Rake could take and be her mate.
Rake had sailed his past behind,
but never would he trade his ace,
his was life of wave and wane,
and so he came to hurt his queen.
As calm as morning dew can be,
so she set to heal her soul,
and knowing he had torn her heart,
came and tried to make her buy.
Mighty Princess with a staff,
took her time to lay her rage,
with a lovelorn heart to heal,
such is life with poor old Rake.
My amazing Child
How I love to hear a child sing,
his lyrics are uncertain but his message plain,
that life is wonderfully simple
if only we choose to live it so.
How I love to hear a child laugh,
he lets his spirit soar into an open-ended sky
and when it returns,he steps aside to cheer.
How I love to watch a child sleep,
he engages a world beyond our dreams
and when Cupid beckons he kindly obliges,
smiles so Cupid keeps shooting even as he leaves.
How I love to watch a child play,
he knows no games or rules
but kicks off a spectacle that catches the minds of
those who know joy.
How I love you
Every kick I follow with devotion,
every move I fix and stare,
each pass draws a heartbeat
and I take great pride in your story.
So if ever doubt lingers,my love, know this,
I love you like I love my football club.
Your voice sets a smile on my face
and in misery you give me relief,
I sure am a bull, but your understanding supersedes rebellion.
Maybe I sin to say this but I swear I love my mother,
I love you just a little less.
My meals I always take with relish,
wishing every pleasure that teases.
The thought of you releases a wet appetite
and your smell pushes my eyes shut.
So if ever hunger nears,my love, believe this,
I need you more than I desire my food.
I know not the art of cellos
nor do I master the steps that link the beat,
but I know enough to set me on motion
and to move my head in every direction.
So when next you need emotion,
I’ll give you just what Mozart gave his concerti.
I’ve risked my life on all that is fair
and know the gains of all that is shares,
but time is a fly that tries our fears
and bonds a trick that trades with care,
so trust me when I say in times of need and despair
I’ll watch you like America watches The Dow.
There are questions of black and white,
of what the past will give the future
