for my family

The Brown Bunny of Baldwin Street

i am

the photograph

caught somewhere between clemency

and a five o'clock fever

found at the bottom of a fish tank

and freed by fire

fourteen, thirty-three, and sixteen years later

i have returned to Baldwin Street

looking for that elusive brown hare

amnesiac ecstasy under a corpulent sun

thirty-six years of entropy

from a dimly lit room

where the present players

are philistines

(or so

i have read)

and the crowds speak only

in subtitles

where the faces: empty leather wallets

with ticker-tape tongues

covet me like a cancer

and the dirt from their boot soles
