Valerie Rose is a British poet from Lincoln, where she lives happily with her dog. She is a graduate with strong interests in the arts, and designed her own artwork including cover for this book of some of her poetry.

I had already written a poem called ‘Requiem’ for my Mum but, a while ago, I watched a documentary about life in the trenches during WW1. I had not realized how young some of the soldiers were, and this inspired ‘Lost
Boys’.
LOST BOYS
In ranks they lie, as once they stood,
shrouded by the clinging mud,
marked by poppies, bright as blood,
the boys who went to war.
Now nothing grows where once they lay.
No birds sing, no children play,
and only old men mark the day
that young boys went to war.
